The Los Angeles Lakers had to go through some serious competition to beat the San Antonio Spurs, especially with DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge on fire with that mid-range jumpers.
And while LeBron James took over in the fourth quarter and scored or assisted on 22 points in the final 12 minutes of game time to secure the away win, there was a subtle contribution to the purple and gold’s scoring column that might have gone unnoticed but was a crucial addition nonetheless.
During the first three quarters, it was anybody’s game as the Spurs defense was making it extremely difficult for Anthony Davis to score in the paint while early foul trouble restricted the Laker defense.
Rajon Rondo on the other hand was having himself a relatively better game. In 25 minutes of play time, Rondo not only did he grab 5 rebounds and deliver 3 assists but also scored 13 points, shooting 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The 33-year-old is shooting the most number of threes than he ever did before. In the seven games that he has played this season, Rondo taking 3.3 three pointers per game while making 43% of them.
Albeit the sample size is relatively small, but the minor changes that the Point Guard has made to his shot like the smaller dip that he takes before shooting, combined with the new and improved ball-movement for the Lakers might have enabled Rondo to finally become a serious threat from long distance.
With James and Davis on post, Danny Green in the corner and Avery Bradley on the wings, the floor is going to be wide open for Rondo to get good looks. Draining them is completely up to the former All-Star and so far, he’s been doing a great job.
